A Life-Style ?
Have you ever seen one of those shows on the Discovery Channel devoted to natural selection? I have, and it caused me to consider how it relates to today’s human condition of homosexuality. But first, a word or two about natural selection.

Natural Selection is the process that causes plant and animal species to change over the years to become better suited to their environment. It is the reason there are no brown foxes in the arctic. Over the years, those with white fur lived longer, and reached breading maturity in greater numbers than their brown cousins. This resulted in fewer and fewer brown arctic foxes, until they were almost non-existent. The genetic information for white fur was passed on, while the genetic information for brown fur got fewer and fewer chances. The same thing happens in the deserts of the southwest. In that area there are no white foxes for the same reason. The white color in that area is a dis-advantage, and causes the early demise of any young fox unfortunate enough to be born with it in that location. Over the years, the white gene has been bread out of the population in that southwest. This is not a conscious choice of the fox population. It just works out that way, due to the ability of the animal to fit into the environment. Hence, the term "Natural Selection".

This phenomenon is not limited to foxes. Fact is, every living thing on the planet is subject to it, even people. Over the years, the human race has been getting larger. Some say it is better nutrition, and it is. But another factor comes into play. The female of the species tends to select and mate with the larger, and stronger of the males she has access to. Mostly at a sub-conscious level, driven by instincts for preservation programmed into her eons ago. It doesn’t happen every time, but when all other things are about equal, the taller, stronger, healthier looking guy will get the girl. At least he used to. In our modern world, intelligence and the apparent ability to make money, have gained parity with size and strength. Natural selection determines which animals survive based solely on which ones are best suited to live in the environment they find themselves in. It happens everywhere, to all species of plants and animals. It really is that simple.

This principle, along with a built in desire to mate, insures the preservation of the species. Preservation of species is the driving force behind all sexual activity. We think that we participate for the pleasure of it, but it is pleasurable so that we will participate as often as possible. It was designed that way. To insure survival.

With that background, we are ready to discuss the human condition of homo-sexuality as it relates to the preservation of the species, and natural selection. It occurred to me that the argument contending that this is a normal, or hereditary condition, is false at the most basic level. It may be common, but it is not normal. Normal as the natural world sees it, is any condition that allows for the preservation and continuation of the species. There are some animals that have the ability to literally change gender in order to reproduce. They don’t have an operation to create artificial parts that don’t work, they actually go through a metamorphosis, and become the opposite sex. For them this situation is indeed normal. It is not so for the human animal. We can’t do that.

Another factor, that seems at odds with the natural order of things, is the seeming greater number of gays in the general population as compared to past ages. Of course it was common to hide this condition from public view in earlier times, but this doesn’t explain the natural selection problem created by higher numbers of gays today. We have accounts of homosexual activity as far back as written records take us. So it is not a new thing. What is new is that today it is considered in vogue. Somewhat chic to be gay, or to promote the activity. Why would a society promote and elevate an activity that prevents the preservation of the species? Consider the following.

Let’s assume that we had a species of antelope that had become sterile by some celestial cataclysmic event. Just how long would this species last as a group? Not very long. There would not be a next generation. None of their genetic make up would be passed on, and that species would disappear, along with any unique traits associated with the group. For any trait to be passed on, the group in question has to be able to reproduce. Men living with men, and women with women, does not ensure the continuation of the human race. No children.

Based on that fact, we should see an on-going decrease in the number of homosexual people as the years go by. They have no chance of passing on any of their traits to the next generation. There can be no next generation. When two males, or two females become a family unit, they eliminate themselves from the gene pool. They are incapable of continuing the species, and the trait of homosexuality would be bread out of the population as the years go by. The "Gay" gene Ms. Goodman suggests, would be long gone due to the inability of the group in question to pass it on. Which brings us back to the question, why does it seem as if there are more people than ever in this condition? There are only a few possibilities. It is either a choice, a genetic mutation, or a birth defect. Left to nature alone, the gay trait in the human animal would have been eliminated by now. Extinct as they say, or close to it. Oh granted, there would be some born with the condition due to genetic mutation or chromosome damage, but on the macro scale, the population of gays should be decreasing according to the rules of natural selection, and heredity.
One explanation for the increased number of people claiming to be gay, may be due to a choice on the part a large population of people. I call it the "Me Too" syndrom. It happens in people who have difficulty socially with the opposite sex, and find safety and acceptance sexually in a relationship with someone of the same gender. This may not be a conscious decision, but it is a decision none the less. The brain finds refuge and peace where it can. The chance for love can be a powerful motivator in a loveless life. The individual rationalizes that, "I must be gay," to justify the lifestyle. Society has now reinforced this behavior by certifying it as normal. In schools all over the country, it is even being promoted.

Heredity as a reason is impossible for a group that can’t reproduce. So that is eliminated. That leaves us with either a birth defect, or something in the environment causing people to be born with the trait. Some chemical in mothers milk, living too close to power lines, or inhaling too much ozone — something has to be causing it, because heredity is out of the question.
Therefore, it must be a defective condition brought on by unknown causes. It is some form of disease. At the present time we don’t know if it is physical, or mental in nature. All that can be said with certainty, is that something is broken. Our society just doesn’t want to admit it. I am 100% confident that someday, there will be a cure. When that day comes, we will see all the people who now proclaim how normal it is, lining up for their shots. Probably want the government to pay for it too. That of course, would be normal.

Now, please don’t write in criticizing me for printing an essay from some homophobe obviously prejudiced against gay people. This is not an attempt to define the rightness or wrongness of homosexuality. Value judgements have nothing to do with natural selection, and I am not suggesting any. Truth is, I could not care less what your life style is. It doesn’t affect me. I am merely examining a phenomenon that seems to inhibit, rather than promote the preservation of the species. A thing that nature never does.
